Join us on December 19, 2024 at 1:00 pm EST for the next event in our Virtual Research Series, The Imperative to Embed Ethics in Arts Administration Education: A Cultural Policy & Advocacy Approach with Dr. Quanice Floyd, Dr. Divya Janardhan, Jeff Poulin, and Ximena Varela! This event is free for AAAE members and $6 for non-AAAE members.
The field of arts management has long connected studies of cultural policy and advocacy in the United States. Whereas cultural policy in the U.S. is often lacking in its explicitness, its implicity enshrines a need for a third component to be integrated: ethics. In the last decade, a shift in the role of arts managers to engage in community-focused social responsibility has influenced the next generation of practitioners and, thus, must be considered in both advocacy and ethics. Through participatory experiences by emerging and veteran arts managers exploring Anthony S. Keller's (1989) “The Arts Manager's Social Responsibility” a proposal for a theoretical and practical grounding of social responsibility for arts managers has been produced. Findings indicate that discourse of ethics cultivates the fertile ground for student exploration in personal values and how those translate to policies and advocacy actions. The historical context of cultural policy and advocacy skill-building beg certain esoteric questions, which complement student’s personal explorations. This session will explore pedagogical approaches from four arts administration educators to articulate key questions to grapple with as we envisage the future of training in cultural policy, advocacy, and ethics for emerging arts administration professionals.
Dr. Quanice Floyd, adjunct instructor, Cincinnati College of Music/Executive Director, National Guild for Community Arts Education
Dr. Divya Janardhan, Assistant Professor, Texas Tech University
Jeff M. Poulin, adjunct instructor, Carnegie Mellon University/Managing Director, Creative Generation
Ximena Varela, Associate Professor, American University
