The field of arts management has long connected studies of cultural policy and advocacy in the United States. Whereas cultural policy in the U.S. is often lacking in its explicitness, its implicity enshrines a need for a third component to be integrated: ethics. In the last decade, a shift in the role of arts managers to engage in community-focused social responsibility has influenced the next generation of practitioners and, thus, must be considered in both advocacy and ethics. Through participatory experiences by emerging and veteran arts managers exploring Anthony S. Keller's (1989) “The Arts Manager's Social Responsibility” a proposal for a theoretical and practical grounding of social responsibility for arts managers has been produced. Findings indicate that discourse of ethics cultivates the fertile ground for student exploration in personal values and how those translate to policies and advocacy actions. The historical context of cultural policy and advocacy skill-building beg certain esoteric questions, which complement student’s personal explorations. This session will explore pedagogical approaches from four arts administration educators to articulate key questions to grapple with as we envisage the future of training in cultural policy, advocacy, and ethics for emerging arts administration professionals.
