“A picture is worth a thousand words.” The phrase highlights the phenomenon that a single image, be it a drawing, painting, photograph, or other, can communicate more efficiently and effectively than many words joined together to create a verbal description. This sentiment can be incorporated as a tool into arts administration research to provide rich data, cross cultures, and negotiate difference.

Elise Lael Kieffer, PhD

Dr. Kieffer serves as Program Director and Assistant Professor of Nonprofit Leadership Studies and as Director of the Nonprofit Resource Center at Murray State University. She is the author or Rural Arts Management (co-authored with Dr. Jerome Socolof for Routledge, 2024) and she is currently writing "Photo Elicitation: Negotiating Power Dynamics and Cross-Cultural Communication" (Bloomsbury).
